abuses of law and power in New York State courts

Scary. From this week's New York Times, a series titled "Broken Bench."

Part 1: Broken Bench: In Tiny Courts of N.Y., Abuses of Law and Power

Part 2: Broken Bench: Small-Town Justice, With Trial and Error

Part 3: Broken Bench: How a Reviled Court System Has Outlasted Critics

Yup. My friend the former ADA who practiced mostly in those courts remembers the drive by arraignment. The cops with the suspect were driving one way, while the justice was coming down the road in the opposite direction. They pulled over to talk for a minute; arraignment complete.
