Baruch Dayan Ha'Emet, I guess

It's traditional to say "Baruch Dayan (Ha)Emet," which means "blessed is the true Judge" or "blessed is the Judge of truth," when hearing of someone's death. It's really hard to say that when you hear this news of Hannah Engle zichrona l'vracha's untimely, horrific death on Saturday night. I did not know her personally, but know a lot of people who did. Hannah was active in Hadar, a graduate student in the joint masters program at NYU, an intern at the UJA-Federation of New York, and a former employee of the JDC (American Joint Distribution Committee), working on the Jewish Service Corp program.

I feel like the longer I live, the more people I know who died far, far too young. I guess that's just the way it is, but it never sucks any less when I hear about someone I know, or could have known, dying before his or her time. It always seems just as tragic as the first time. And there are no real words of comfort.

May her memory be for a blessing.

Death is a profound evil. I don't know how life could work without it, and we do praise the God who makes peace and creates evil.

I'm sorry to hear about her death - she sounds like she was a tremendous positive force in the world.
