Women in Space

I thought that this column from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer was interesting. Not earth-shattering, but interesting. I had no idea that women tried to become astronauts as early as 1961. Of course, I remember thinking Sally Ride was the coolest person ever when I was a little kid, but that was the '80s, not 1961. (Also, come on, she has a great name, perfect for an astronaut.)

Found via post on ms.musings, which often has short, interesting items.

I assume you know that there was a woman cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova, who DID fly, as early as 1963, only two years after the first manned space flight.

Nope, didn't know. Thanks for telling me!
